It is said that being a mum is the hardest job in the world, although the most rewarding, however we should spare a thought for Mrs Vassilyeva, the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev who holds the record for the most children given birth to by one woman, with an incredible total of 69.
The Vassilyev’s story dates back to the 1700’s, when the couple from Shuya, Russia, would be blessed with 4 sets of quadruplets, 7 sets of triplets and an amazing 16 pairs of twins, producing 69 children through 27 births.
Although little is known about Mrs Vassilyeva, and some may doubt the possibility of these events, she is noted in the Guinness Book of World Records for this astounding achievement, with references made to every birth being recorded by the Monastery of Nikolsk. Further information is gathered on the events by a 1783 edition of The Gentleman’s Magazine, with the Vassilyev’s also referred to in the 1800’s by the Lancet and the Saint Petersburg Panorama.
Feodor Vassilyev sadly died at the aged of 75, having had a total of 87 children during his lifetime, with his second wife giving birth to a further 18 children during their relationship.
